Council tax scam warning
Fraudsters are ringing residents and telling them that they have paid too much council tax — but they can reclaim the cash for a small fee.
Householders are then asked for their bank details so they can have the tax repaid into their accounts.
Once armed with the details, the criminals can raid bank accounts for savings.
Neither the council nor its associated companies will ever contact people in this way or request payment over the phone.
The Government's Valuation Office Agency stated that the scam has been targeting various areas of Britain since December.
