The Malpas Arts & Literary Festival

The Malpas Arts & Literary Festival is drawing closer and organisers are delighted with the exciting line-up of artists and performers that are coming to entertain us this year.

The Festival events will all take place in the village, with the Celebrity Charity Cricket Match at Malpas Cricket Ground between the cast of Channel 4 TV's 'Hollyoaks' and The Malpas Festival XI.
Legendary author and broadcaster Henry Blofeld — Blowers, will commentate on the game and add his touch of magic to what will be a very exciting contest. He will also be on hand after the match to sign his books.

The Festival opens with The Art Exhibition and the Village Play — The Festival Players production of 'A Dress in the Afternoon' written by award winning writer John Oakden.

The Art Exhibition in The Jubilee Hall is open the whole weekend and will again feature the Bishop Heber School GCSE year. This is the third year the school has exhibited and organisers say they are very pleased to welcome them again.

The Literary Lunch takes place on Friday. It is always a very popular event and this year fascinating author, Philip Gooden, will be talking about his books 'Skyscrapers, Hemlines and the Eddie Murphy Rule' and 'The Word at War' as well as his Shakespearian Murder Mysteries, so don't miss the chance to listen to this very talented writer while you enjoy a delicious lunch!

On Saturday 21st there is a rare opportunity to hear the celebrated theatre director, Loveday Ingram, in conversation. Loveday, who lives in Malpas, is about to direct the Royal Shakespeare Company and will talk about her life in the theatre.

To commerate 400 years since the death of Shakespeare, there will be readings from your favourite Shakespeare plays accompanied by medieval music in St Oswald's Church and The beautiful Welsh mezzo soprano, Sioned Terry, will be singing in St Oswald's. and there is also another chance to see The Village Play and there is music from 2pm till midnight in The Red Lion.

The finalists from The Peter Wheeler Short Story Competition will be reading their entries in the morning and later in the day The Malpas Writers Group perform 'Spectrum'.

Sunday sees the conclusion of The Art Exhibition and The Celebrity Charity Cricket Match at the Malpas Cricket Ground from 2pm — 7pm. Teas and ales, cakes and a barbeque will be on hand to make this a fantastic family day out.
