Stop for the Zebra in Malpas

warning sign zebra

There have been a number of incidents where vehicles are failing to stop for pedestrians waiting to cross on the zebra crossing on Chester Road. As the children return to school we have been asked to remind motorists that they must stop at the zebra crossing if pedestrians are waiting to cross. Driving on regardless of the pedestrian is illegal and dangerous.

Rule 195 of the Highway code states that 'as you approach a zebra crossing:

  • look out for pedestrians waiting to cross and be ready to slow down or stop to let them cross
  • you MUST give way when a pedestrian has moved onto a crossing
  • allow more time for stopping on wet or icy roads
  • do not wave or use your horn to invite pedestrians across; this could be dangerous if another vehicle is approaching
  • be aware of pedestrians approaching from the side of the crossing.

We have also been asked to point out that vehicles must not park on the zig zag lines approaching the crossing as this impairs other drivers view of the crossing and is dangerous. Rule 191 of the Highway Code states

  • You MUST NOT park on a crossing or in the area covered by the zig-zag lines.
  • You MUST NOT overtake the moving vehicle nearest the crossing or the vehicle nearest the crossing which has stopped to give way to pedestrians.

We hope that residents and those driving through the village will be more mindful of pedestrians as we are all pedestrians at some point.
