Storm Doris

There have been a number of multi-agency teleconferences chaired by Cheshire Police regarding the severe weather we are currently experiencing.

Below are the key points;

No change in forecast and winds are still expected to peak in the next few hours before abating slightly at 1400 hours. Threats and risk remain mainly to the strategic road network Thelwall and Runcon Bridge, and some localized power outages in the Runcorn and Cheshire East Areas.

This incident is now classed as a major incident due to, full closure of Thelwall M6, full closure of the Centre express way, and a number of properties losing their roof on Cotton Lane, Runcorn resulting in the residence being displaced.

It has been noted that SP Energy Network have moved to a Level 2 Emergency and have a large number of areas off grid. This is a National rather than Local issue and there are a number of local small faults. An emergency centre has been established and non-emergency works have been postponed.

From a safety aspect, SP Energy Network have reiterated to each organisation that with the large volume of trees down, to remain vigilant in relation to overhead networks that may become tangled in trees, these networks may still be live with a high voltage and it is important that agencies await SP Energy Networks arrival before dealing with the fallen tree.

SP Energy Networks has advised that due to the amount of ongoing incidents and critical information coming through they are unable to run any of the vulnerable persons reports at the moment (will provide asap).

If updates/information required regarding any vulnerable customer then please contact SP Energy Networks as below and information will be provided as quickly as possible.

Police neighbourhood alert
"The winds at the current time are extremely strong across the county and I would advise motorists to consider delaying any journeys that they have planned over the next couple of hours unless they are absolutely essential.

There are numerous road closures across the county, including the M6 Thelwall Viaduct, Central Expressway in Runcorn, A49 at Higher Whitley, A559 at Great Budworth and many smaller roads. The A533 Jubilee Bridge in is Runcorn is also closed to high sided vehicles. Diversions are currently in place, but delays are expected.

"We have had a large number of calls relating to fallen trees in the road and damaged buildings which have been passed onto the local councils to deal with.
Adverse weather conditions do not of course just affect motorists; members of public are urged to be aware of their own safety and pay attention to warnings and advice being issued."
