Born in Malpas in 1890 as Albert Harristt Allman the illegitimate child of Harriet M. J. Ridgway.(Nee Allman)

Albert was baptised 6 (5) March 1890 in Malpas. (No father’s name on the baptismal record.).

The 1891 census shows Harriett married to and living with John Ridgway in Wychchough Lane, Malpas.

Harriett married John Ridgway in 1890 and the 1891 census records him living in Malpas.

Albert changed his name to Albert Ridgway. He first appears as Alfred Ridgway in the 1901 census records and is known by that name thereafter. All the Ridgway children are recorded as born in Malpas

The 1901 census shows him with the name Albert Ridgway living in Lea Newbold. It looks like he chose to be known as Alfred and we find him under this name in the 1911 census boarding in Liverpool and all the military records.

He married Martha Hughes in 1915.

Alfred died on the first day of the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium in October 1917 after more than two years on the Western Front.

He was 27 years old and had been living in Liverpool before the war.
