Gunner No. 3917 ‘X’ 4th Trench Mortar Battery, Royal Field Artillery.

Died from unknown cause due to war service: Whitchurch, Shropshire 1 May 1920. Age 25.

Buried in Whitchurch Cemetery. Plot 287.

Born in Malpas in 1894.

Son of the late Thomas Edward Burns (shown on his marriage certificate, although we can find no record of him in the censuses).

The 1901 Census shows John living with his grandparents Michael and Mary Burns, in Malpas.

Married Dorothy Gladys Box on 15th December 1917.

The 1911 census shows John as a domestic chauffeur.

John died in Whitchurch Cottage Hospital from illness attributed to his war service.

Recorded date of Death in Whitchurch Cemetery records indicated as 1st May 1919

Reported in August 1920 Malpas Deanery Magazine that John's name was to be added to the Malpas War memorial because he died from illness traceable to war service.
