Driver No. 36834 B Battery, 79th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.

Killed in action in France 17 April 1917. Age 23.

Buried in Faubourg D’Amiens Cemetery, Arras, Pas de Calais, France. V.A. 15.

Born in Ellesmere, Shropshire in 1894.

Eldest son of James and Emily Hopley of Cuddington, Malpas.

The 1911 Census shows John as general servant to Mrs Harriet Taylor, baker, and her family at Church Street, Malpas.

John and his friend David Davies had enlisted together on 7th September 1914.

They were waiting to be called up in October 1914 and were serving by December 1914.

They both died in the same battle, killed by the same shell, on 17th April 1917.

They are buried in adjacent graves.
