The 1911 Census shows John as a farm labourer at the age of 14.
We know that he was working as a station porter for the London and North-Western Railway at Malpas prior to enlisting.
(John’s eldest brother of the same name had sadly died at the age of 8 and he was named after him)
John died from meningitis in Cambridge Military Hospital in Barrow-in-Furness.
He did not see active service overseas and this is confirmed by his receiving no medals.
