John Owen Jones

John (Owen) Jones

Private No. 40096 3rd Battalion South Lancashire Regiment.

Died of meningitis in Barrow in Furness 13 May 1917. Age 19.

Buried in Mostyn (Christ Church) Churchyard, Flintshire. North of Chancel.)

Born in Mostyn, Flintshire on 18 May 1897.

Third son of Samuel and Jane (Nee Holland) Jones of 5 Glanymnla, Llanerchymon, Holywell, Flintshire.

The 1911 Census shows John as a farm labourer at the age of 14.

We know that he was working as a station porter for the London and North-Western Railway at Malpas prior to enlisting.

(John’s eldest brother of the same name had sadly died at the age of 8 and he was named after him)

John died from meningitis in Cambridge Military Hospital in Barrow-in-Furness.

He did not see active service overseas and this is confirmed by his receiving no medals.
