Joseph had an older stepbrother, William Fairbrother.
The 1911 Census shows Joseph as a general farm lad working on Whalebone Farm, Willington, Malpas.
The December 1918 Malpas Deanery Magazine records: "Joseph Hewitt recently lived in Tushingham parish" but as boy attended Malpas School.
