Fifth son of Thomas and Elizabeth Hopley of Cross Hill, Malpas.
1911 census records Wilfred as living at Cross of the Hill.
On enlistment on 4th March 1916, Wilfred recorded his occupation as wheelwright.
Wilfred had enlisted with the Reserve Cavalry Regiment on 4th March 1916, but was discharged within months as medically unfit, without seeing active service overseas.

He was discharged as medically unfit 4 months (July 1916) after enlisting and it is unlikely that he saw any service in the Theatre of War.
The discharge papers indicate a history of tuberculosis, pleurisy and weight loss as the reasons.
