Born in Toronto, Canada, on 7th March 1917.

Son of John & Elizabeth (Nee Burke) Hughes.

1921 census shows him age 5 living at 19 Melville Street, Toxteh Park, Liverpool

He was recorded as living at 14 Sunnyside at the time of his death.

At 00.21 hours on 30 Oct 1942 the SS Bullmouth (Master John Wilfred Brougham) in convoy SL-125 was hit by one torpedo from U-409 (Massmann) about 100 miles north-northwest of Maderia.

The ship fell behind convoy, and was sunk at 01.40 hours by two torpedoes from U-659.

The master, 44 crew members and five gunners were lost.

The chief officer and five crew members landed on the island of Bugio near Madeira.
