Named after Tom Mercer who was one of the local residents who helped to organise many of the amateur dramatic, musical and social activities that took place in the village in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s.
The Mercer family were well known in Malpas especially Tom Mercer who was a great organiser of local fetes and carnivals for the younger generation.
Tom Mercer who lived in the house situated between the Jubilee Hall and Beech House (the Old Post Office) which he called "Uncle Tom's Cabin" where he provided entertainment for children.
Tom was also secretary of the Malpas Town Band, and one of the 24 Malpas postal workers in 1930.
