Church Street, Malpas – St Oswald's Wall Collapse Update

Following the collapse of a section of the church wall Cheshire West and Chester Borough Council commissioned a structural engineer to inspect the boundary walls and to provide advice on the repair work needed.

In accordance with the advice of the engineer, two main stages of work will be undertaken
-stage one is a temporary repair to make the wall safe (stabilisation works)
-stage two is the permanent repair of the wall.

In advance of the works starting it was necessary to carry out investigative survey work to gather information so that the stabilisation works could be carried out safely. These investigative surveys have now been completed.

A review of the survey results has identified additional ongoing investigations in the form of small excavations adjacent to the existing wall are needed.

The completion of the initial investigative surveys has allowed the process of appointing suitable contractors to start.
As part of this process potential contractors visited the site last week and further site visits are scheduled to take place this week.

The Council recognises the inconvenience that the road closure is causing and will continue to do everything reasonably possible to progress the works.

Once the stabilisation works are complete it will be possible for the road to re-open using temporary traffic signals.

It is still expected that the works will be completed early summer, but note that this timeframe assumes that specialist contractors are available.

Further updates will be provided when the contractors have been appointed and confirm their availability.
