Additional garden bin – renewal payments

Summary:

This briefing note outlines requests for residents to pay for their additional garden bin.

Background
The garden waste collection service was suspended in March at the start of the coronavirus pandemic as staff sickness levels in the workforce increased.
All garden waste resources were used to support the domestic waste and recycling collections to allow them to continue to operate as normal.
The service resumed on 4 June 2020 with scheduled garden collections taking place for residents of the borough.

Residents can have a second garden bin at an annual charge of £40.
Whilst the garden collection service was suspended, the Council did not accept any requests for additional garden bins and suspended the renewal charges for those residents who have a chargeable second garden bin.

What is happening
Due to the collection service resuming, residents who already have a second bin need to be advised that their annual payment of £40 is due.
This is managed on a month by month basis; if a new request was received in June 2020, their annual renewal payment would be required in June 2021, being notified via letter beforehand.

The renewal payments have been suspended for three months for April, May and June.
Therefore, all monthly renewal payments will move forward by three months so residents will receive a full 12-month service.

For example, if a renewal payment was due in May, it would now be expected in August.

Arrangements are in place to start issuing renewal letters from mid-June for the start of July where some residents will be asked to pay their annual fee of £40.
This fee will cover a full 12 months service and has not included the period when the service was suspended.

Date: 15 June 2020
